In Year 1, we place great importance on creating a strong and supportive transition from Reception into Key Stage 1. Children continue to learn through purposeful, hands-on experiences and continuous provision, allowing them to build on the independence, curiosity and confidence developed in the Early Years.
Alongside more formal daily lessons, children have regular opportunities to explore, practise and apply their learning through carefully planned activities in the classroom and outdoor environment. As the year progresses, this provision gradually changes to reflect the children’s growing maturity and to prepare them for the routines and expectations of Year 2.
In English, children develop their phonics knowledge so that they can read with increasing fluency and confidence. They enjoy a wide range of stories, poems and non-fiction texts and use these as inspiration for discussion and their own writing. Children learn to compose clear sentences, develop their spelling and handwriting and use basic punctuation accurately.
In maths, children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 100 and build fluency in addition and subtraction, while beginning to explore multiplication, division, fractions, shape and measure. Across all areas of learning, we encourage children to make choices, solve problems, take on challenges and become increasingly independent and resilient learners.

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children’s learning throughout Year 1. We encourage families to work with us to help children develop confidence, independence and a love of learning. Regular reading at home is particularly important. We ask that children read regularly, practise their phonics sounds and words, and talk about the books they are reading. Sharing stories together and asking questions about what they have read are great ways to support their reading and understanding. There are also lots of simple ways to support learning at home, such as practising spelling and number facts, counting, playing games, writing for a purpose and encouraging independence with everyday tasks. We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences with us. Please also let us know about any changes or events at home that may affect your child, as this helps us to understand and support them in school and ensure they feel happy, settled and ready to learn. |

We believe that some of the most memorable learning happens through real experiences. We widen children’s experiences through trips, visits and visitors, including people from our local community who can share their knowledge, skills and experiences. These opportunities encourage children to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and develop a greater understanding of the world around them.
Our visits are carefully chosen to enhance the curriculum and bring learning to life, giving children opportunities to see, experience and make connections with what they have been learning in school. We also offer a range of after-school clubs, giving children opportunities to try new activities, discover interests and develop a wide variety of skills beyond the classroom.

At Christleton Primary School, we want every child’s Year 1 experience to be happy, exciting and full of memorable experiences. Year 1 is an important stage as children build on the foundations developed in Reception and grow in confidence, independence and resilience as learners. We pride ourselves on creating a warm, supportive environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to Be the Best You Can Be. We recognise that the transition from Reception to Year 1 is a significant step, so we use familiar routines, relationships and provision to support children as they settle into their new class. This support continues throughout the year as children develop their confidence and independence. Children learn through a combination of formal teaching and purposeful provision. Our enhanced provision is carefully planned to support and extend learning across the curriculum, giving children opportunities to practise and apply what they have been taught. Indoor and outdoor provision encourages children to explore, investigate, problem-solve and develop resilience in both formal and informal learning experiences. Being part of Year 1 also means becoming part of the wider Christleton Primary School family. Children continue to develop positive relationships across the school and become increasingly confident members of our community. Strong relationships with families are central to everything we do. By working closely with parents and carers, we aim to ensure that every child feels happy, supported and excited about their learning throughout Year 1. |

Reading at HomeIn Year 1, we follow the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme to support children in developing their reading skills. Reading regularly at home is an important part of your child’s learning, and we encourage children to practise the sounds and words they are learning in school. If you are unsure about how to support your child with RWI at home, please use the link below for helpful information, videos and guidance for parents and carers. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/ |
