Throughout Year 6, children receive full coverage of the curriculum alongside carefully planned SATs preparation, helping them to develop their knowledge, understanding and confidence while continuing to experience a rich and varied curriculum.

Year 6 children are given a wide range of opportunities to take on whole-school roles and responsibilities, developing their leadership skills, confidence and sense of responsibility.
In Year 6, children draw together the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout primary school while preparing for the transition to secondary education. We encourage them to become increasingly independent, organised and reflective learners who are confident in tackling challenge and taking responsibility for their own progress.

In English, children read increasingly complex texts and develop their ability to interpret meaning, make inferences, discuss themes and justify their ideas using evidence. In writing, they learn to make deliberate choices about vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and structure, adapting their style confidently for different audiences and purposes. They also develop the ability to edit and refine their own work independently.

In Maths, children consolidate their understanding of number and calculation while extending their knowledge of fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics. There is a strong emphasis on fluency, reasoning and applying mathematical knowledge to multi-step problems.

Across the curriculum, children are encouraged to think critically, make connections and develop their own viewpoints. Alongside academic learning, we place great importance on confidence, resilience, responsibility and independence, ensuring children leave Christleton well prepared for the opportunities and challenges of secondary school.

Reading Books

Our minimum expectation is that children read at home at least four times each week, for approximately 20 minutes each time. Regular reading is an important part of developing fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and confidence, particularly as children prepare for the transition to secondary school and their Year 6 assessments. We encourage children to read a wide range of texts and to discuss what they have read with an adult where possible.

Homework

Homework will be provided each Friday and should be completed and returned to school by Wednesday. This will include Reading and/or Grammar and Mathematics activities.

Homework is designed to consolidate and reinforce learning that has taken place in the classroom. It provides children with an opportunity to practise key skills, revisit important knowledge and develop greater confidence and independence in their learning.

The Year 6 team is always happy to support with homework where necessary. If your child is unsure about an activity or finds a particular task challenging, please get in touch so that we can provide guidance and ensure that homework remains a positive and manageable experience.

Parents and carers continue to play a vital role in supporting children’s learning and development throughout Year 6. By working closely together, home and school can provide children with the encouragement, consistency and support they need to achieve their best and prepare confidently for the next stage of their education.

There are many simple and effective ways to support learning at home. These might include encouraging children to read regularly and independently, discussing books and texts together, asking questions about characters, events and vocabulary, practising key spellings and times tables, talking about mathematical ideas in everyday situations, encouraging children to explain their thinking and helping them to develop good organisational and study habits.

As we prepare children for their SATs, regular opportunities to read a range of texts and discuss what they have read can help to develop comprehension, vocabulary and confidence. Regular practice of key skills can also help to reinforce learning and build confidence in preparation for the assessments. We believe that preparation should be manageable and positive, with children encouraged to do their best while maintaining a healthy balance.

Supporting children to become increasingly independent with homework, preparing for the school day and taking responsibility for their belongings can also help develop the skills they will need for secondary school.

We greatly value the partnership we have with families and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences from home. These insights help us to develop a fuller picture of each child and celebrate their individual strengths, progress and successes.

By maintaining strong communication between home and school, we can work together to nurture children’s confidence, independence and resilience throughout their final year at Christleton Primary School, supporting them as they prepare for SATs and take their next steps into secondary education.

We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences with us. Please also let us know about any changes or events at home that may affect your child, as this helps us to understand and support them in school and ensure they feel happy, settled and ready to learn.

Throughout Year 6, children have the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting trips, visits and experiences that enrich their learning beyond the classroom. These experiences provide opportunities to develop knowledge, apply learning in real-life contexts and create lasting memories with their peers.

Our Year 6 curriculum is enhanced through visits to Chester Zoo, where children can develop their understanding of animals, habitats and conservation; Stockport Air Raid Shelters, where they can deepen their knowledge of life during the Second World War; and Nant BH, where children take part in a range of outdoor and adventurous activities, developing teamwork, resilience, independence and confidence.

These experiences complement our classroom learning and provide children with opportunities to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and develop important life skills.
At Christleton Primary School, we want every child’s final year with us to be happy, exciting and full of memorable experiences. Year 6 is a special time when children build on the knowledge, skills and confidence they have developed throughout primary school, while preparing for the next exciting stage of their education.

We pride ourselves on creating a supportive and nurturing environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to Be the Best You Can Be. Our experienced staff take time to understand each child’s individual strengths, interests and needs, supporting them to become independent, resilient and motivated learners who take pride in their achievements.

Throughout Year 6, children experience a broad and ambitious curriculum, alongside carefully planned preparation for their SATs. We ensure that children have opportunities to deepen their knowledge, develop their skills and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. We also provide a wide range of enrichment experiences, whole-school responsibilities and leadership opportunities, helping children to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of responsibility.

Being part of Year 6 also means creating lasting memories as children reach the end of their primary school journey. A particular highlight is our end-of-year production, which gives every child the opportunity to contribute, develop their confidence and celebrate their achievements with the wider school community.

We place great importance on preparing children for a positive transition to secondary school. We work closely with local secondary schools and provide opportunities for children to build relationships, become familiar with their new surroundings and develop the confidence and independence they need for this important next step.

Strong relationships with families are central to everything we do. By working closely with parents and carers throughout the year, we aim to ensure that every child feels supported, confident and proud as they complete their time at Christleton Primary School and take their next steps into secondary education.
