We work closely together to create a positive, engaging and supportive classroom where children are encouraged to be curious, independent and enthusiastic learners. We take time to get to know each child as an individual, recognising their strengths and supporting them to overcome challenges. Through engaging lessons, purposeful activities and strong relationships, we help every child to develop their confidence, independence and love of learning

Year 3 marks the beginning of Key Stage 2 and an important step towards greater independence. Children build on the knowledge and skills developed in Key Stage 1 while being encouraged to think more deeply, explain their ideas and take increasing responsibility for their learning.

In English, children read a growing range of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, developing their understanding of vocabulary, characters, themes and information within texts. In writing, they begin to organise their ideas into more developed pieces, using paragraphs, varied vocabulary and an increasing range of grammatical structures and punctuation.

In maths, children develop their understanding of numbers to 1,000 and become increasingly fluent with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There is a strong focus on multiplication tables, fractions and applying mathematical knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving.

Across the curriculum, children investigate, ask questions and make connections, developing the confidence to tackle new challenges and persevere when learning feels difficult.

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children’s learning throughout Year 3. We encourage families to work closely with us to help children develop confidence, independence, resilience and a love of learning.

Regular reading at home remains particularly important in Year 3. We ask that children read regularly and talk about the books they are reading, developing their fluency, expression and understanding. Sharing stories together, discussing new vocabulary and asking questions about characters, events and ideas are excellent ways to support reading comprehension and encourage a lifelong love of books.

There are also many simple ways to support learning at home. Children can practise their spelling and vocabulary, recall number facts and times tables, particularly the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, and develop their mental maths skills through everyday activities and games. Encouraging children to write for different purposes, such as shopping lists, letters, stories or diary entries, can also help them develop their vocabulary, spelling and confidence as writers.

As children progress through Year 3, we encourage them to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and organisation. Supporting children to remember their belongings, organise themselves for school and take pride in their presentation can help develop the important skills they need to become successful learners.

We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences with us. Please also let us know about any changes or events at home that may affect your child, as this helps us to understand and support them in school and ensure they feel happy, settled and ready to learn.

Together, we can help every child make progress, develop confidence and independence, and enjoy a successful and rewarding Year 3.

We believe that some of the most memorable learning happens through real experiences. We widen children’s experiences through trips, visits and visitors, including people from our local community who can share their knowledge, skills and experiences. These opportunities encourage children to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

Our visits are carefully chosen to enhance the curriculum and bring learning to life, giving children opportunities to see, experience and make connections with what they have been learning in school. Throughout Year 3, children also have the exciting opportunity to take part in a residential experience. This is a special part of the year where children can develop their independence, resilience and confidence while spending time away from home. They are encouraged to try new activities, challenge themselves, work as a team and support one another, creating wonderful memories and strengthening friendships along the way.

We also offer a range of after-school clubs, giving children opportunities to try new activities, discover interests and develop a wide variety of skills beyond the classroom. We want every child to have opportunities to explore new experiences, discover what they enjoy and develop confidence in themselves as they grow throughout Year 3.

Year 3 is a very special year as children begin an exciting new chapter in their primary school journey. As the first year of Key Stage 2, it is a time of change, growth and new opportunities, where children build on the skills they have developed in Key Stage 1 and begin to take greater ownership of their learning.

One of the most exciting things about Year 3 is seeing children become increasingly independent and confident learners. They are encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas, solve problems and persevere when things become challenging. We help children to understand that making mistakes is an important part of learning and celebrate their efforts as well as their achievements.

Year 3 also brings new learning and exciting experiences across the curriculum. Children develop their understanding of multiplication and division, fractions, reading, writing and spelling, while exploring fascinating topics across science, history, geography, art, computing and other subjects. They are encouraged to make connections between their learning and develop a growing bank of knowledge and vocabulary.

There is a real sense of adventure and discovery in Year 3. Children are curious about the world around them and are encouraged to investigate, experiment, discuss and think deeply. We aim to provide memorable experiences that bring learning to life and give children opportunities to apply what they have learned in practical and meaningful ways.

Year 3 is also about developing the whole child. We encourage children to build positive friendships, work collaboratively, show kindness and respect, and become responsible members of our school community. We want every child to feel proud of who they are and confident in what they can achieve.

Most importantly, Year 3 is a year where children begin to realise just how much they are capable of. We are excited to share this journey with them and to help them grow into independent, resilient, curious and enthusiastic learners who are ready for all that Key Stage 2 has to offer.
