Welcome to our Year 2 class page. Here you will find useful information about life in Year 2, including what the children will be learning, key areas of the Year 2 curriculum and helpful information to support your child throughout the year.


Mrs Hughes and Mrs Bingham are the Year 2 class teachers. Throughout the week, the children are also supported at different times by Mrs Maddison, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Basaran. Our aim is to create a happy, supportive classroom where children feel confident to explore, learn and grow.










In Year 2, we build carefully on the learning children have developed in Year 1, helping them to become increasingly independent, confident and resilient learners. By the end of the year, children are working towards becoming fluent readers who can discuss and interpret what they have read, increasingly confident writers who can organise their ideas into clear sentences using appropriate vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and mathematicians who can work securely with numbers to 100, recall key number facts and begin to apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving. Books and stories are at the heart of much of our English learning. Children explore high-quality texts, discuss characters and events, interpret meaning and share their own ideas. These texts provide a rich stimulus for their own writing, helping them to develop their vocabulary, sentence structure and creativity. In maths, children build on their Year 1 understanding of number, becoming more fluent with addition and subtraction and developing their knowledge of multiplication, division, shape, measure and fractions. Alongside our daily lessons, children have opportunities for practical, hands-on learning through Challenge Time, both indoors and in our outdoor area, where they can practise and apply the skills they have learnt in different ways. Challenge Time also allows children to discover new interests and strengths. When they design and build ramps or structures, they become architects and engineers; when they draw and create, they become artists; and in our writing areas, they become authors. Through these experiences, children develop confidence, curiosity and resilience while learning to make choices, solve problems and take greater ownership of their learning.




PE Days PE days will be communicated through Seesaw. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days. Reading Books Book-changing days and any information about changing books will be communicated through Seesaw. Communication Seesaw will be our main method of communication with parents and carers. Please check Seesaw regularly for important messages, updates and information.



Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children’s learning throughout Year 1. We encourage families to work with us to help children develop confidence, independence and a love of learning. Regular reading at home is particularly important. We ask that children read regularly, practise their phonics sounds and words, and talk about the books they are reading. Sharing stories together and asking questions about what they have read are great ways to support their reading and understanding. There are also lots of simple ways to support learning at home, such as practising spelling and number facts, counting, playing games, writing for a purpose and encouraging independence with everyday tasks. We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences with us. Please also let us know about any changes or events at home that may affect your child, as this helps us to understand and support them in school and ensure they feel happy, settled and ready to learn.



We believe that some of the most memorable learning happens through real experiences. We widen children’s experiences through trips, visits and visitors, including people from our local community who can share their knowledge, skills and experiences. These opportunities encourage children to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and develop a greater understanding of the world around them. Our visits are carefully chosen to enhance the curriculum and bring learning to life, giving children opportunities to see, experience and make connections with what they have been learning in school. We also offer a range of after-school clubs, giving children opportunities to try new activities, discover interests and develop a wide variety of skills beyond the classroom.


Year 2 is an important year for children as they grow in confidence, independence and resilience. We encourage them to take greater responsibility for their learning, have a go at new challenges and begin to recognise the progress they are making. Throughout the year, children develop the skills and attitudes they need to become increasingly confident learners, while still having plenty of opportunities to learn through practical and engaging experiences. We also place a strong focus on preparing children for their transition into Year 3, helping them to feel ready and excited for the move into Key Stage 2.
