Welcone to our year 5 class page. Here, you will find useful information about life in year five, including what the children are learning, key areas of the curriculum and how you can help your child.



Mrs Shaw (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) and Mrs Barnes (Monday, Tuesday) are the class teachers. Alongside us, we have amazing support from teaching assistants: Mrs Bradshaw, Mrs Gaynon and Mrs Madison. We work closely to provide a supportive and nurturing learning environment where every child feels they can succeed.











In Year 5, children build on the knowledge and skills developed across Key Stage 2, becoming more independent, thoughtful and resilient learners. They are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their work, explain their thinking and apply what they know in increasingly complex situations. In English, children read a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, developing their ability to discuss themes, make inferences, retrieve information and explain their ideas using evidence from the text. In writing, they learn to plan, draft, edit and improve their work, using increasingly varied sentence structures, precise vocabulary and a wider range of punctuation to write effectively for different purposes and audiences. In maths, children work with numbers up to 1,000,000 and develop greater fluency in calculation, including multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percentages. They apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving and also develop their understanding of measurement, geometry and statistics. Across the wider curriculum, children continue to develop their knowledge in science, history, geography, computing, art, design and technology, music, PE and other subjects. They are encouraged to ask questions, investigate, make connections between their learning and communicate their ideas with increasing confidence. By the end of Year 5, we want children to be secure in the key knowledge and skills they will need for Year 6, while also becoming curious, motivated learners who are willing to take on challenges and persevere when learning becomes more demanding.

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children’s learning throughout Year 5. We encourage families to work closely with us to help children develop confidence, independence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning. Regular reading at home continues to be particularly important. We ask that children read regularly (at least 4 times a week) and discuss the books, texts and other materials they are reading. Talking about characters, vocabulary, events and the author’s choices can help to develop reading fluency, comprehension and critical thinking skills. Encouraging children to read a range of genres and for different purposes will also help to broaden their interests and understanding. Homework is sent home weekly and should only take between 10 to 30 minutes. Please encourage the chidren to complete this as independently as possible with help when needed. If your child is finding the task too difficult, please try again later or send into school for support from the class teacher. As children become older, developing independence and responsibility is increasingly important. Encouraging them to organise their belongings, manage their time, complete homework independently and take responsibility for everyday tasks will help them to develop skills that will support them throughout Year 5 and beyond. We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents and carers to share children’s achievements, interests and experiences with us. Please also let us know about any changes or events at home that may affect your child, as this helps us to understand and support them in school and ensure they feel happy, settled, confident and ready to learn.



We believe that some of the most memorable learning happens through real experiences. We widen children’s experiences through trips, visits and visitors, including people from our local community who can share their knowledge, skills and experiences. These opportunities encourage children to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and develop a greater understanding of the world around them. Our visits are carefully chosen to enhance the curriculum and bring learning to life, giving children opportunities to see, experience and make connections with what they have been learning in school. We also offer a range of after-school clubs, giving children opportunities to try new activities, discover interests and develop a wide variety of skills beyond the classroom. To enhance our learning, we have class visits to Chester Zoo, Tatton Park (Viking Day) and a class residential to Nant BH outdoor centre. https://www.nwoes.co.uk/ In addition to our trips, we use our amazing outdoor learning environment to enhance learning across the curriculum, as well as forest skills. We have had online video calls with authors, NASA and an art gallery. as well as visitors to share historical artefacts. Where will our learning take us next?

Alongside their academic development, we encourage children to become increasingly responsible and independent in their learning and everyday school life. Year 5 also provides many opportunities for enrichment, creativity and personal development. Children are encouraged to take on responsibilities, develop leadership skills and contribute positively to the wider school community. Through a range of experiences and activities, we aim to build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility, while helping children to discover and develop their individual talents and interests. As children move through Year 5, we encourage them to reflect on their progress and take greater ownership of their learning. We want every child to recognise their strengths, understand that mistakes are part of learning and have the confidence to challenge themselves and persevere when things become difficult. Strong relationships with families are central to everything we do. By working closely with parents and carers throughout the year, we aim to ensure that every child feels supported, confident and proud of their achievements. Together, we can help our Year 5 children Be the Best You Can Be and develop the skills, independence and confidence they need to thrive in Year 6 and beyond.
